Why Laundromats Advise Against Washing Clothes at 40°C: The Reason May Surprise You

When it comes to washing clothes, many of us consider 40°C the ideal temperature: hot enough to clean effectively, but gentle enough to protect fabrics. However, some laundry professionals and detergent manufacturers suggest that 40°C may not always be the best choice for achieving maximum hygiene.

Why 40°C May Not Be Enough

Washing at 40°C can remove everyday dirt effectively, especially when you use a good detergent. However, the temperature alone is generally not sufficient to eliminate all bacteria and microorganisms that may be present in clothing, towels, underwear, and bed linen.

For heavily soiled laundry or items that require a higher level of hygiene, washing at 60°C can provide better microbial reduction, provided that the fabric’s care label allows it.
